A SPOOKY STORY · PART 1 OF 2

The Pumpkin on Porch Number Nine

Nora carved her pumpkin on October 1st, which was too early, and everyone told her so. By October 12th it should have been a puddle. Instead it sat on the porch looking fresh as a tennis ball.

Her brother Theo poked it. "It's cold."

"It's been outside."

"Colder than outside."

That night Nora shone her flashlight through the window. The pumpkin had been grinning when she carved it, wide and goofy. Now the grin was smaller. Tighter. Like it was keeping something in.

At 9:04 the porch light flickered once.

At 9:05 something went tap, tap, tap. Not on the door. On the glass. Right beside her face.

Nora looked down. The pumpkin was no longer facing the street.

Part 2 lands early next week. Keep your porch light on.

Now you color it

Somebody is hiding in this pumpkin. Print the page, grab your crayons, and see if part 2 of the story agrees with you.

Where that page came from

It's from our Halloween Activity Book, which has plenty more where that came from. If you have a little one who isn't ready for mazes yet, My First 100 Spooky Words is the gentler version.

Happy haunting,
